Diary ~ Tennessee in Spring, # 5 - The Cello

March, 2006

April 1, 2006

Today was a beautiful and mellow day – I did almost no chores, and even drew some, which is a pleasant break from my recent days of hard work and country living. A couple of friends of Clover who went to highschool with him came by today, as well as one of my friends from The Haven. Clover usually sleeps in later than me, but this morning I was woken up by the sound of his cello – when I sleepily followed the music downstairs, I found him playing his cello in the nude on the balcony, even though it was still a little chilly in the morning air. He looked enchanting sitting there, so I pulled out my pencils and asked if he wouldn’t mind posing. He was a great model – he held it for the entire hour and a half it took to do the drawing, without ever taking a break, even though his arms were held high in the air. It was a wonderful experience, and I will certainly draw him more often.

I finished the drawing and was ready to start another one when some our friends drove up – I don’t know what inspired Clover’s shyness the first day I met him, because he was completely unconcerned about his nudity this time. He continued playing the cello while his friends hung out with him on the porch. I snapped some photos of our little get together as well, which he didn’t mind at all.

In the photo above, you can see Emily seated on the banister as Clover plays, while my friend from the Haven, Gone Away (thats his name) sits in the background

Below, I photographed Clover from the same spot where I was sitting when I made the drawing

His friends Emily and James were sweethearts. I had never met them before, but Emily is an artist, and they were both happy to model for me. Emily wasn’t shy at all, but James was – he came out in a bathrobe, which he took off only after he was seated on the model stand and after he had strategically placed a pillow to protect his sense of modesty. I think the drawings came out lovely. We spent the rest of the day hanging out and going for a long hike in the hills, and I finally made it to the little gym at The Haven for the first time since I got here. I was sorry to see Emily and Justin leave – they live at Nashville now, and don’t visit often, but I am looking forward to seeing and painting them again. Clover told me later that he used to date Emily. They seem like they must have been a sweet match.

The two drawing of James and Clover are available for sale on this website - click on the links below for information. The drawing of Emily is not linked to this website, because I sell primarily male nudes, but if you are interested in purchasing her, please feel free to write.
