This card is the Five of Jade, which corresponds to the Five of Pentacles in the standard tarot. Here, a young boy and his mother walk destitute before the steps of a temple, without so much as glancing at the god within. The temple is decorated with four great jades, and a fifth rests on the breast of the idol, Xochipilli, god of art, love, poetry, and the King of Jade. He wears his usual attributes, and holds in one hand an ear of corn, in the other a paper butterfly.
This card relates to loss, material and spiritual; it is the card of the dark night of the soul. The family pictured do not take the solace they might, but wander past unheeding of the spiritual wisdom of their ancestors; this card warns the viewer that tragedy and loss is often unpreventable. By focusing on the material at the expense of the spiritual, the querent will not learn the lessons the tragedy was meant to teach. This card councils that one has only to turn about, to look into the face of Xochipillli and there, find within oneself the strength and wisdom to carry on.
