This card is the Five of Staffs, which corresponds to the Five of Wands in the standard tarot. The five Macuiltonaleque, the gods of excess and pleasure, engage in mock battle with five staffs. The gods are painted red, green, yellow, blue, and black, the colors of the five directions (the fifth direction is the center). Their hair is bound with a white fillet, and decked with balls of eagle down, for the tonaleque are also the spirits of deified warriors, and the eagle down balls are symbols of sacrifice. This card represents the search for riches and sensuous pleasure; it is a card of opulence, fortune, and abundance, but cautions against its excess, and the ill possibilities of ruthlessness in its pursuit. Inverted, the card represents trickery and deceit.
