This is the King of Hearts, which corresponds to the King of Cups in the standard tarot. Here, the king is Tlaloc, Lord of the Rains, who dwells in the sacred mountain of Tlaloacan. His face is painted black, for he dwells in the darkness beneath the earth, and dark, also, because such are the recesses of men's hearts. He is dressed in blue, for he is the lord of water, and he holds the Turquoise serpent, the Xiuhcoatl, in one hand; that is to say, lightning, with which he splits the firmament to drop rain on the thirsty lands below. In the other hand, he holds a bleeding heart; in his sacred mountain, Tlaloc stores the souls, the most sacred hearts, of all things, and it is there that they await until they are reincarnated on earth. Thus, Tlalocan is also the Mountain of Plenty, filled with the souls of all nourishing things, and here at his feet grow chillies, and behind him, great stalks of life-giving maize. Above his head float rain clouds, from which drip jeweled drops of rain, and at his feet and forming his throne are more clouds, pregnant with sacred waters. On his face is the fanged mask; fanged because he can be cruel as well as just, and his eyes are framed with turquoise circlets for he sees into the hearts of all men.
He symbolizes a fair man, of science, law, business and the arts. He is creative and intelligent. However, this man is mercurial, as apt to smile upon the querent as lash him with furious storms. He brings both prosperity and tragedy in his wake. If the card is vertical, read his positive attributes, if inverted, adversity, injustice, double-dealing, and vice will follow.
