Diary ~ Lars

September, 2006

I met Lars, the guy who modeled for me yesterday, several years ago, in Mexico. Lars is a handsome Swedish boy, who is passionate about fishing and sports, straight, and a world traveler. When I met him in Teotihuacan, near Mexico City, he had already been traveling through Latin America for at least 5 months. I had gone that day with a cousin to Teotihuacan, which is an ancient city of the Toltecs in ruins even when the Aztecs controlled Mexico. I had climbed the pyramid of the sun with my cousin, which is an arduous hike, and found Lars sitting on the top, quietly contemplating the phenomenal view. I thought he was beautiful and would make the perfect model, so I pulled out my sketchbook, sat down somewhat near him, and started drawing the view. Sure enough, the sight of me drawing caught his curiousity, and I saw him get up to see what I was doing from the corner of my eye. "Can I see what you are drawing?" he asked, and with that, I stood up, showed him my drawing, as well as the numerous figure sketches I had inside already, and we started a little conversation. In the course of it I asked if he would be intersted in modeling for me - he said he was (which didn't surprise me - world travelers are often open to new adventures, and modeling for an artist is something most people have never done before meeting me). So my cousin Miguel and I, with my newfound friend Lars, proceeded to explore Teotihuacan, and when we were done, I brought him back to my Aunt's house where we were staying and painted him there. This was about three years ago. He stayed in Mexico City for about a week, and I saw him a couple of times after that - we got along very well. But then he left, and I hadn't seen him since. But then just a few days ago he called out of the blue to say he was living here now - he found a girlfriend in Honduras who is American, and they moved here together. I am very happy about that, since I will now have the opportunity to paint him all I want - and maybe with his girlfriend too, which will be fun (I love drawing couples). Anyway, I drew him again yesterday. He looks almost the same, except for a beard which he has since grown. If I can find the drawings I did of him years ago I'll post them - in the meantime, here are two of the drawings from last night's session.

I did the drawing of him putting on sunblock above, and the one of him seated from below.

I also had a photo shoot with him - I'll post some of those later, but Lars wants to approve of anything before I post them, so after he gets back to me, I'll post some photos to share with you. He is a great model - very sweet and handsome, and very interesting. I will be working with him a lot in the near future.
