Diary ~ Watercolor Painting demonstration #1

January, 2006

I painted a 4 hour pose of Jesse this morning in the studio. In the painting he is seated on a rock taking of a sandal. The process of a typical watercolor painting is described below

In the first photo above you can see me cleaning my brush as I work on the painting of the model. In the drawing below, I have laid out the basic outlines of the pose and lain in some general washes, to suggest the warmth of his skin and the shadow area on his chest. To this point I have been working for about 40 minutes.

In the next step (below) I work in detail on the face and hair. This is the most difficult step, and one which I usually do early on, since it is easy to overwork the face and destroy the drawing. The feeling of emotion and personality is very important to me, and difficult to capture; I feel at this point satisfied with what I have done, and proceed to work on his back and add warmer tones to his arms and hands, in addition to beginning to think about the background.

At this point (above) I solidify the drawing for his lower body, and lay in some background tone to help pop the figure out. I usually place a dark tone in the background where the figure is in the light, and leave the paper white in areas where the figure is in shadow.

The figure is starting to achieve some kind of finish (above); I blocked out the shadow area where his hand and arm are near his inner thigh, and threw the back leg into shadow. The drawing is almost done, and now is awaiting only the final touches.

The drawing is finished; in the final half hour I added subtle hightlights to the sandals, bracelet and his hip, reinforced the rock and threw in the shadow of his leg. I also added tone and value to the background, to make it more complex and to pop out the figure. Check out the link below to purchase this painting!
